Oscillations of a suspended slinky

چکیده
This paper discusses the oscillations of a spring (slinky) under its own weight. A discrete model, describing slinky by $N$ springs and masses, is introduced compared to continuous treatment. One interesting result that upper part performs triangular oscillation whereas bottom an almost harmonic if starts with "natural" initial conditions, where just pulled further down from rest position gravity then released. It also shown period simply given $T=\sqrt{32 L/g}$, $L$ length weight $g$ acceleration independent other properties spring.

متن کاملThe Falling Slinky
Consider a slinky that is held at one end while the rest of it is allowed to hang freely. If the slinky is released, then as it falls due to gravity it also shrinks in extent due to the contracting force in the slinky itself. A few years ago it was discovered that the net effect of these two changes exactly counteract each other at the bottom extent of the slinky and therefore the bottom of the...
متن کاملSLINKY: Static Linking Reloaded
Static linking has many advantages over dynamic linking. It is simple to understand, implement, and use. It ensures that an executable is self-contained and does not depend on a particular set of libraries during execution. As a consequence, the user executes exactly the same executable image as was tested by the developer, diminishing the risk that the user’s environment will affect correct be...
متن کاملOscillations of a Giant Solar Tornado
Solar magnetic tornadoes are known to be one of the mass and energy transport mechanisms from the lower solar atmosphere into the upper layers of the solar corona. A bright spiral structure with two arms is observed using high-cadence EUV images of 171, 193 and 304 Ǻ channels of Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) on 10th of July 2011 for three hours. ...
